Continuing Appointment Review (CAR) Full-time Clinical Academics on Probation

All newly appointed full-time clinical faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences (DOVS) must undergo a Continuing Appointment Review (CAR). This review is typically conducted at the beginning of the fourth year. A successful review results in a transfer to a continuing appointment. These reviews evaluate your academic performance during the first three years of your university appointment and offer feedback on your career development.
The review seeks to address one question (Procedures Manual, Section 3.3.1.2., pp. 16-18):
“Given the terms and expectations set out at the time of the Probationary appointment, and the academic standards of the Department and Temerty Faculty of Medicine, does the candidate’s performance merit a recommendation that:
Process
1. DOVS initiates your review at the end of the third year of your appointment.
2. You submit a dossier that includes a:
3. DOVS submits your dossier to the DOVS CAR Committee for review.
4. The DOVS CAR Committee submits a recommendation to the DOVS Department Chair. Possible recommendations include:
5. Final decisions: DOVS Department Chair makes a final recommendation to the Dean, who decides whether to approve or deny transfer to the system of continuing annual renewal.
6. DOVS notifies you of the outcome. The Chair’s Office will coordinate a meeting between you and the Department Chair to provide detailed feedback and discuss your future academic plans.
