Macrae Bioethics and Professionalism Course in Ophthalmology

HSC Patient Support Centre

The second biennial Macrae Bioethics and Professionalism Course in Ophthalmology will be held in Toronto at the Hospital for Sick Children, Patient Support Centre on November 8th and 9th 2025.  The course will run all day Saturday and a half-day Sunday with a mixture of workshops and didactic sessions. We will start the day with an Eldoa session, which is a practice that focuses on back strength and alignment. We will host a dinner Saturday evening for all attendees and speakers.  The entire course is funded by the William Macrae Fund for Excellence in Ophthalmology Education and there is no industry funding for any component of the event. All meals, including the dinner Saturday, will be covered for attendees.  Programs/participants are expected to cover the cost of travel and accommodation, and we will have a discounted accommodation rate at a local hotel.

The first course took place in October of 2023 and was a resounding success with residents from across the country attending.  We will continue to have a diversity of relevant bioethics topics covered and include compassion training, with Dr Agnes Wong, and Equity/diversity/inclusion content with Dr Nupura Bakshi.  We will have celebrated guest speakers from across North America.

The course is aspirational and will allow trainees to meet celebrated leaders and role models in ophthalmology that demonstrate important virtuous characteristics in how they practice and how they handle certain ethical scenarios in ophthalmology. It promises to be a valuable course for trainees.

Registration is limited to senior resident's in their 4th and 5th year, so please ensure that your trainees sign up promptly to secure a spot in the course by completing the registration form.
