Cornea & Anterior Segment

Cornea and Anterior Segment services include identification and management of congenital and acquired abnormalities; infections and inflammations of the lid, conjuctiva, cornea, and sclera; dystrophies and degenerations of the cornea, including the corneal epithelium, Bowman’s layer, stroma, Descemet’s membrane and endothelium; abnormalities of the crystalline lens, oracular surface and tear film; cornea surgery and Eyebanking; neoplastic disorders of the eyelids, conjunctiva and cornea; anterior segment trauma, including primary repair and secondary reconstruction (including injuries caused by temperature and radiation, chemical injuries, concussion and contusion injuries, penetrating and perforating injuries, surgical trauma and recurrent erosion syndrome).

Considerations include the effects of various systemic and ocular medications, and the risks and benefits for surgical procedures. Tests to aid in the diagnosis include measurement of the tear film, microbiology, genetic analysis, and ophthalmic examinations (e.g., corneal topography and tomography, anterior segment optical coherence tomography, anterior segment ultrasound, wavescan technology, confocal microscopy, and specular microscopy).
