Dr. McGowan has published in peer-reviewed journal, book chapters and abstracts in the areas of ocular melanoma diagnosis
and treatment, UBM imaging of anterior segment tumours, conjunctival melanoma and enucleation surgeries. He has presented at scientific meetings in Canada, USA, and Europe.

Current clinical interests include conjunctival neoplasia and melanoma, iris melanoma treatment, brachytherapy techniques for ocular melanoma, surgical treatment of ocular cancers and genetic profiling in uveal melanoma. He continues to be active in teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates and is involved with research in genetic tumour profiling.

Dr. McGowan was involved in preparation of written examinations in Clinical Sciences in Ophthalmology set each year by the
International Council of Ophthalmology. He also has collaborated internationally regarding the TNM classification of ocular tumours of the conjunctiva for the American Joint Committee on Cancer, 7th Edition, 2012.
