Dr. Yeni Yucel is a distinguished pathologist-scientist and a professor in both Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences and Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. He is the founding director of the Human Eye Biobank for Research, a crucial resource for eye disease research. Dr. Yucel's interdisciplinary roles extend to his membership in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering Science and Technology (iBEST) and professorships in Physics at the Faculty of Science at Toronto Metropolitan University and the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science.
Dr. Yucel's international acclaim comes from daring work that transcends traditional boundaries. He has demonstrated previously unknown links between diseases of the eye and pathology in the brain. His discovery of the lymphatic circulation within the eye shattered a century-held paradigm. It earned him the prestigious Lewis Rudin Glaucoma Research Prize from the New York Academy of Medicine. This accolade is but one of many national and international awards.
As an innovator, Dr. Yucel has pioneered non-invasive imaging methods that have revolutionized our ability to study the eye. Leading a dynamic team and using these tools to peer into the eye's inner workings, his work is lighting the way for novel biomarkers and potential new treatments for ALS and Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome.
